The Spanish-American war lasted 6 weeks and originated from Cuba’s struggle to gain independence from Spain. As a result of the effect it had on American investments in the island, the US became fully involved in the conflict and this led to the US going against Spain by assuring Cuban independence. The United States was viewed as a major world power with very powerful military strength after the Spanish-American war.

With this, the US became a strong leader not just in the Americas but in the world. The war led to The United States acquiring The Philippines and Guam and this in turn, increased her influence with Asia. Spain was much unprepared for the war and this led to the US crippling the Spanish defense as the US military, although still unprepared, had a top-notch sea power, an element the US clearly outclassed Spain.
