What is soma in Brave New World?

Soma in the brave new world is a drug issued for free to all the World State citizens in small doses. It makes the users feel good when taken in the recommended small doses. When used in large amounts, it creates amusing hallucinations and a feeling of timelessness. Citizens in World State are cheered to take it in the belief that “A gram is better than a damn.” Soma is recommended when citizens experience disturbing negative emotions. It is considered a means to social control, making the World State citizens slaves.
