What author saw hypocrisy in the lives of the Puritans?

A. Nathaniel Hawthorne

B. Mark Twain

C. Kate Chopin

D. Willa Cather

A

Answer: A

In the novel “The Scarlet Letter”, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about Hester Prynne a young lady — in a puritan village — who was accused of committing adultery and was forced to wear a scarlet with the letter “A” inscribed to it. This would make everyone who meets her know about her atrocity and subsequently treat her with contempt.

She conceived a child out of wedlock but would not mention who the father was. When her estranged husband who was thought to be dead set out to find out who was responsible for the child, he found out it was one of the ministers who was pressuring her to name the child’s father.
