What is cultural imposition?

A

Cultural imposition is the tendency of a person or a group of persons to believe that their cultural beliefs and values must be dominant over the rest. As a result, they will tend to impose their values and behavioural patterns onto other people. It mainly happens in the medicine and nursing world. For instance, western culture believes that a person’s physical health is vital and should be valued more than spiritual health and other cultural peculiarities.

Due to cultural imposition, some patients get treated in the widely accepted paradigm overriding their religious and cultural beliefs on medical and health assistance. A good example is children immunization where nurses may recommend vaccinations based on their beliefs and not because it is the right or important thing to do.
